It's too hot for oven roasted babies. Silly Otter.

Nice list. I'll have to have a think and post this on the blog.

xo

Great questions, just what my day needed. I'll link later after I post, right now I have to go yell at someone.

Done..... http://j1978.blogspot.com/2008/07/knitty-otter-is-having-contest-and-i.html

Wow, I'm gonna have to print out the questions so I don't miss one!

1. I've been knitting about 3 years, since November of 2005. I had to look up my purchases at work to know that. I thought it had been longer, I was wrong.

2. The first sock I ever knit was almost exactly 2 years ago. I chose Lorna's Laces sock, and I hated how the colors pooled, and never made the second sock. I don't think I made my first pair of socks until a few months after that.

3. Spank her. Oh yeah, I'd do me some of that. Naughty naughty girl....

4. I can't tell, I don't want others to love it as much as I do. It rhymes with Schmundara, but don't you go looking for it, it's mine all mine, bwa ha ha.

5. Don't care, I just follow the pattern, and how I get there doesn't matter.

6. Autumn colors...navy, olive green, browns, oranges, dark reds. And spring greens...sour apple, sage, etc. I leave all the luscious pinks and aquas for my dear sweet otter.

7. I have two perfect labs. Ok, one is not so perfect, she's neurotic. But she's sweet and harmless, so we let her stick around.

8. Oven roasted, with a raspberry cream sauce...baby really is a dessert. With a nice ice wine, yum.

9. Lace

10. I'm not a perfume-y kinda girl. My favorite scents are fresh bread, my babies just out of the bath, rain, forests. God, can you smell the sap? (Pun intended)

11. Always and forever the Indigo Girls (I'm such a dyke), and for the last little while I've been loving Girly Man.

12. 4.5. Is that all? Really? Yup, that's it.

13. Ice cream, all the way, is my biggest weakness. Sweets. Chocolate with chocolate ice cream on top, with chocolate sauce on top, and a big spoon full of sugar just because their aint enough. And the Lemon Bar Brule at Claim Jumper.

14. You probably don't wanna know. Suffice it to say that feed a kid a bunch of blueberries, and changing the diapers later smells surprisingly fruity.

15. Good old bamboo, kinda sproingy, easy on my hands. Most of my socks have been knit on addi circs though.

16. I loved 2 Askew's Fish Scale Socks created by our own JBW'S Jeanne. They are cute and impressive looking but easy.

17. Right now I'd like to be stranded for a month on a deserted island all by myself. And a cabana boy who has the know-how to cook what he can catch and create fruity island drinks. I would need 5 knitting projects: One baby sweater, cuz it would go fast and be easy; two pairs of socks; One intricate lace shawl; and one blanket (the heather blanket by brooklyn knits). Anyone can join me really, but the only rules are that everyone has to be capable of wiping their own butts, and you can't give me shit if all I want to do is knit. After the month is up, I want to go back to my real life, cuz I'd miss my sweety and my ankle-biters.

That's it, did I get it all? Whew!

Getting to Know you Contest Questionnaire:

1.) How long have you been knitting?
3+ years

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?
Around three years. it's why I got interested in knitting in the first place. I HATE how store bought socks leave those marks on my ankles. If I'm gonna have marks on my ankles...well...never mind...

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?
Heh, thought I had it when I came back MArtinique in the Caribbean. Luckily, didn't have it.

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?
Is it wrong to say my own? Really. It is. ;) I'm knitting socks with it right now.

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?
Definately, cuff down.

6.) What's your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?
My favorite color is plaid, but I like olive or purple.

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?
TWO fabulous little furburgers: Miss Lulu and Dusty

8.) Babies: Oven Roasted or Barbecued?
Personally, deep fried is better. But, given the your choices, I'd say roasted. Cooks faster than a barbeque.

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?
Scarves or hats.

10.) What's your favorite scent?
Amber and vanilla, Zents. Mmmmm.

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?
Right now? Ummm....The Chants of the Monks of Mt Carmel. Seriously.

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?
Around 10 by hand, DOZENS on my circular sock machine. (I made 6 pairs this weekend already.)

13.) What's your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?
Salty if there's beer involved. Sweet otherwise.

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.
Most interesting? I'd have to say my fingers. After I had a lobster salad croissant at a work function. And they smelled pretty good, but could have used some lemon.

15.) Needles - DPN's: Wooden, metal or plastic?
It used to be wood, until I broke too many. Now it's metal all the way. I'm not really a plastic sort of guy. Well, for knitting needles anyway.

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?
I don't really have one. I just cast on 54 stitches, and go from there.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?
I'd want my former cat, Mr bambi. He'd catch food for us. If it had to be a human, I'd say either Alex Baldwin (from 15 years ago) or McGyver. As for knitting, I'd want a knitted bag, so I could climb the coconut trees and gather with it. If it got felted, it could carry water. And, as for leaving, only to get more beer, or to catch the latest episode of Big Brother. ;)

1.) How long have you been knitting?
Eek, this is hard...about 5 years?

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?
Since February 14, 2008.

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?
Send her to the same circle of hell as all those folks who wore something and then returned it to the store (I'm an ex-retail manager.)(Can I use this answer for the scary baby question?)

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?
Louet Gems. Love it!

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?
Cuff down. But I'm only on my 2nd pair ever, and am willing to try new things.

6.) What's your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?
Blue. Almost any shade but pastel. Especially blue the color of oceans on maps.

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?
Parker - part Lab, part Golden, part shepherd. Very much a teenager.

8.) Babies: Oven Roasted or Barbecued?
I'm a vegetarian, so I get to opt out of this question.

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?
Baby sweaters. Fast, affordable, you get to make a mom or dad happy, and you live vicariously as a grandparent.

10.) What's your favorite scent?
The salt air of the ocean. Bread baking. Lilacs blooming.

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?
Yo Yo Ma - his cello suites always make me happy.

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?
1.73 (time to Kitchener the toe of one from pair two, then finish the decreases and Kitchener the toe of the other sock)

A13.) What's your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?
Both at the same time. In Chicago you go to Garrett's popcorn and order the cheese corn and caramel corn in spearate bags so that you can mix each handful to the exact proportion of cheese-iness and fatty-ness and sweet-ness and chewy-ness.

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.
My dog's fur. He always smell a bit metallic.

15.) Needles - DPN's: Wooden, metal or plastic?
My new favorite is the KnitPicks circular with nickel-plated tips. Honestly, people, $4.99 for a great 40" needle!

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?
Don't have one. I'm being tortured to make very plain ribbed socks for my husband. Even a little bit of pattern has been nixed.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?
My husband and daughters and dog, either a lace shawl or the Mitered Square Blanket and tons of colors of Tahki Cotton, and I'd want to stay forever if I could add a library and a kitchen and some reality TV.

I'm in!

http://squid-knits.blogspot.com/2008/07/getting-to-know-me.html

I'm in... it'll be on my blog.

What's with the babies question, Otter?

xo

Great contest. My answers are here

Getting to Know you Contest Questionnaire:

1.) How long have you been knitting?

Before dinosaurs roamed.

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?

A bit more than a year.

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?

Make her untangle this damn skein of laceweight yarn.

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?

I'm not sure either. The prettiest I've used was from KnitPicks but it wasn't superwash (I never thought about that beforehand ... hmmm)

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?

Toe up - hands down :-) !

6.) What's your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?

Purple forever.

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?

No live ones. I love your otter photo and have a couple of plush ones - does that count as low maintenance pets?

8.) Babies: Oven Roasted or Barbecued?

I'm a vegetarian.

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?

Oh I'm a sweater knitter, but love to knit them from sock yarn.

10.) What's your favorite scent?

Lavender

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?

I love wind quartets - how weird is that?

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?

I've also made 9 pairs - does that make me the grand prize winner? Your twin?

13.) What's your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?

Very dark chocolate

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.

Wild blueberries while out walking.

Wooden - Lantern Moon if I could only afford more of them, but mostly I use metal since that was what was invented when I started and that's what I've always used.

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?

I've just knit basic toe up socks.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?

Hmmm - could I just be deserted by myself? I'd have maybe a Hanne Falkenberg pattern with lots of different sock yarns to knit it in. That would keep me busy and I could just sit and think.

I'll play!

17. being the age i am, (and being the age robert redford is, i'm pretty sure i'm not lusting after HIM anymore! he kinda makes me want to throw up when i see a recent picture of him). i gotta go for the fam thing: i'd wrap myself with my sibs,sibs-in-law, at least 1 of my parents, my dh, my sil, her son, dh's GOOD cousin, our children - they are all wonderful people. i'd have to bring every ball of yarn, every needle, just 1 of the spinning wheels, all the unspun fiber. and i would absolutely have to leave since all of the above people would be bored to death with me knitting stuff for them all the time. and who can wear knits in the tropics?

18 (BONUS QUESTION) What would you be doing if you weren't knitting?

ans: flyfishing or slitting my wrists. or throwing up.

OMG! I thought question #3 was about M-A-L-A-R-I-A! I just read on Squidknits, and wondered why I had a different question. It wasn't MALARIA, it was MARIA. Ohhhhh....so, my revised answer is: You can have Maria, and I'll take Tony.

Anita

1.) How long have you been knitting?
I've been knitting since about 2004. I asked my father for knitting needles for Christmas, and he was upset because that's not a "real" present. Now he's proud that I knit and he's the one who started me!

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?
I've been knitting socks for about 1 1/2 years.

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?
I don't :-)

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?
I don't have a favorite. Any sock yarn that's machine washable, enjoyable to touch, fun colors (more than one or at least tonal dyed), and can be knit on size 2 needles is my favorite.

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?
Cuff down. I adore, adore, adore toe up, but I really love kitchner stitch, and you can't kitchner the toe if you start with the toe!

6.) What's your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?
Bright colors. I like purples, blues, pinks, and reds especially (not necessarily all together!). I absolutely hate khaki green and/or orange for knitting (although I have enjoyed some things made by others in those colors).

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?
I have two kitties in my home, Sophie Germain and Sir Carolan (called Sophie and Carolan). Bailey was our eldest kitty, but he passed two months ago. He was my knit kitty who sat on my lap ignoring the yarn while I knit (even when the yarn went across his face or whiskers, all he would do is twitch them away!).

8.) Babies: Oven Roasted or Barbecued?
No thank you, they give me indigestion.

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?
I like mittens. I'm guessing that Christmas stocking falls into the sock category. Cozies are a lot of fun because they're usually quick knits (mug cozies, french press cozies, etc.).

10.) What's your favorite scent?
Not fake scent. I usually can't handle scented products, but an unscented lotion that has essential oils added to it is usually safe. No florals. I like citrus if it's a fruit scent. I *adore* the scent of bergamot oil (bergamot is what changes a simple black tea to a delightful earl gray).

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?
I spent a lot of time singing Avenue Q over and over and over to myself. The songs and a bit too catchy!

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?
I have no idea how many baby socks I've knit (make 'em for one friend and then everybody's babies need 'em). However, I've only knit 3 1/2 pairs of adult socks and three Christmas stockings.

13.) What's your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?
Sweet. Or, sweet and salty together can be delightful.

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.
Truthfully? We forgot to change the kitty litter for the last few days (very busy week). The scent of cat urine struck me immediately upon getting out of bed. I was sad. Litter was quickly changed but that shock to the nose was remembered upon waking this morning.

15.) Needles - DPN's: Wooden, metal or plastic?
Bamboo. I do have a set of size 6 metal DPNs that I don't use very often. Last time I used them was for a project that I wanted to start immediately but my bamboo size 6 were in use.

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?
Truthfully? I like a stockinette sock. Sock knitting is fun because it's an easily portable project that can be done without any thought (except for the small amount of concentration on the heels and toes).

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?

I'd want my partner with me. I'd want a portable project that had something of interest in it (perhaps a fair isle stocking). I am sure that I'd want to leave. I get antsy if I'm away from the internet for too long.

Hi...Joining the bandwagon with my answers - you can find them on my blog here -
http://fabricnfiberfanatic.blogspot.com/2008/07/knitty-otters-contest.html

1.) How long have you been knitting?
I learned to knit about... two and a half, three years ago while I was living in Spain. I haven't stopped since

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?

My first attempt at socks was about a year and a half ago, with Jaywalkers in a cotton blend. The experience unnerved me a bit until I joined Sock Knitters Anonymous on Rav and found out how much fun it could be.

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?

Angry zombie badgers and the Broadway recording of "Jesus Christ, Superstar".

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?

Of the ones I've used so far, Dream in Color Smooshy.,

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?

Cuff down.

6.) What's your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?

About a third of the yarn I own is green. Another third is brown, grey, or black.

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?

Two cats and a dog who thinks he's a cat.

8.) Babies: Oven Roasted or Barbecued?

Mmm, baby. Hickory smoked.

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?
I love knitting toys, particularly of the sea life persuasion. I've even got a 6-foot long knit giant squid that sleeps on my bed.

10.) What's your favorite scent?

Either Schrodinger's Cat or Absinthe from Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs.

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?

I'm in a Depeche Mode kick. Then again, I'm always in a Depeche Mode kick.

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?

4. Of course, I've got enough yarn to knit 30 more pairs...

13.) What's your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?

Salty, usually, with an exception for sweet with spicy attached. I can eat a box of atomic fireballs like nobody's business.

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.

The chicken with carrots, apples, and onions I made for lunch. Num, num.

15.) Needles - DPN's: Wooden, metal or plastic?

I prefer metal. I knit pretty tightly, so having something that'll let stitches slide easily is my preference.

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?

I really liked BMP by Aija Goto, but all the colorwork worked on 0s can be really frustrating.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?

Who would I want with me? My henchmen, of course. No supervillain leaves home without them. I'm want to bring my Lizard Ridge blanket with me because I'm addicted to Noro's colors, and as long as there were food and water, I'd be taking an extended vacation from chasing my nemesis and/or paying my student loans.

1.) How long have you been knitting?

My mom taught me when I was about 8. I got bored with it after about 1.5 inches of a green and black striped garter stitch scarf with a column of dropped stitches (I think? there was a ladder down the middle)

I decided that I needed to knit my senior year of college (98-99). I went to the Golden Fleece in Santa Cruz and they handed me bamboo needles, some hand spun/hand dyed yarn and a how-to-knit booklet.

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?

I started in 2005 while drinking wine and listening to miles davis. (It took me a year to finish that first pair...)

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?

If she's such a problem, maybe she should be banished from sesame street.

Is maria still on sesame street?

Do the kids still watch sesame street?

Does it even exist anymore?

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?

I don't have a favorite. I dig lorna's laces (it was my first sock yarn!) and I like alpaca sox -- it feels good on my fingers!

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?

Yes.

6.) What's your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?

I like cool colors in deep or bright tones.blues/purples/greens. the occaisional red/yellow orange accent.

BUT None of this wussy pastel stuf.

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?

Yes. Banzai (her secret Identity is Captain Shenanigans) and Greebo (AKA Slashy boy)

Too hot for roasting, I'll have to go with BBQ with a nice teriyaki marinade.

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?
Erm... Stuff?

10.) What's your favorite scent?

Jasmine at night! lemon, lavendar, amber resin (mmmmm..... hippie)

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?

My most recent discovery is the Moldy Peaches and Kimya Dawson (1/2 of the moldy peaches). I hereby dub there genre Quirkustic.

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?

5 if you count the 2 half pairs that I have going right now as we speak sitting in bags at various locations in my house.

13.) What's your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?

Lemony! or Bready! or Salty!

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.

The various good things cooking at whole foods.

15.) Needles - DPN's: Wooden, metal or plastic?

Wood or Plastic. metal=hurty

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?

I really like pomatomatomatomatomatomus, but It's taken me like a year and a half to get 3/4 of the way through because I keep screwing up, then banishing the socks to the knotty corner for a while before coming back to them...

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?

My husby and his bass, bessie. Knitting...

Some lace and some more mindless stuff too (socks or something). I would probably want to leave at some point for a bit, but I'd have to come back, cause the sweetie probably wouldn't ever leave (especially if it was a deserted cat island...)

I haven’t found one yet.

Hi,
Fun contest and great questions! Here are my answers:
1. I've been knitting for about 8 months after taking a free class over the winter.
2. I've only knit one pair of socks so far, started (and restarted and restarted) in April and finished in May.
3. Maria... I have no idea what to do with her.
4. Since I've only knitted one pair of socks I don't have a favorite yarn. I need something with which to compare it.
5. Toe up, so far.
6. Favorite color is green. I love most bright colors, though. Not a big fan of browns and grays in yarn.
7. I have one dog, Belle.
8. I have borderline high cholesterol so babies are not a recommended food.
9. I like to knit anything in the round.
10. Cookies!
11. I love anything that I can sing along with. Lately it's been Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love.
12. 1 pair.
13. I love SWEET. I'm on a diet right now to fit into my bridesmaid's dress for my sister's wedding and I'm really missing sweets.
14. Um, I smelled the clothes that I packed for the gym to determine if they were ok to wear. They weren't too rank.
15. All of mine are bamboo.
16. The only one I've knit is the universal toe-up pattern that I found on Ravelry.
17. I think I'd want my dog, a hot man who loves me (haven't found one yet) and I guess I'd have to learn to knit a bikini. I would miss my family so I doubt I'd want to stay forever. But a few months would be nice.

Questionnaire on the blog.
Great contest!

Getting to Know you Contest Questionnaire:

1.) How long have you been knitting?

My mother taught me when I was about 5 and I've been knitting ever since which is a very long time.

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?

When I was young and my sister was a teenager, she knit her boyfriend a pair of socks. I thought that was very dumb. You had to do it with very boring yarn and a million little bobbins.

When the self-patterning sock yarn came out, I decided to give it a try, so maybe 3 or 4 years ago.

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?

My boss is named Maria. 'nuff said!

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?

So many of them are beautiful - i really can't choose one.

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?

Toe up.

6.) What's your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?

Purple always. I'm definitely not too crazy about orange. I look terrible in it.

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?

Nope - I have lots of plants though. By the way, re lavender (I read today's post) lots of nurseries call that Russian lavender rather than Russian sage. I bought some recently and was surprised to see it called lavender and the nursery guy said that is a common name for it, although it is not really in the lavender family.

8.) Babies: Oven Roasted or Barbecued?

I gotta think on this one

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?

I love to knit sweaters and jackets, and purses, and ... just about anything.

10.) What's your favorite scent?

lavender (followed by Russian sage :-) )

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?

What do you do with a problem like Maria? :-) or maybe Edelweiss (NOT)

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?

I'd guess 6 or 7 pair.

13.) What's your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?

Definitely sweet. Home baked chocolate chip cookies.

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.

Russian sage (really)

15.) Needles - DPN's: Wooden, metal or plastic?

Wooden is my first choice, but matal is OK too.

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?

Just basic toe up.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?

I think my daughter. She's in college so I don't get to see her that much. She's smart and fun and very interesting. Yeesh - I sound like her mother. Oh yeah, I am.

As for knitting, I'd bring a huge stash and sit, knit and talk with her. Maybe she'd finally learn and we'd both knit. That would be fun for a while, but I'd like to to go back eventually.

I'm in! My entry is here:
http://knittingsarahk.blogspot.com/2008/07/ottery-contestry.html

Yea! Great questions and fun to read all the answers so far. Mine are up here.

Mine is here!

Cause I know you've been just dying to know me better. *L*

xo

I'm in too! (If I could do that cool little link thingy, I would, but I'm a sped, so I won't)

I'd want enough yarn to make a blanket, maybe a mitered square blanket or log cabin, two sweaters, a cobblestone for moose and maybe a tited duster for me, a few pairs of socks, monkey's,knee highs, and something chunky so i could design a big SOS signal to get us the heck out of there.

Okay, I played. :-)
Post here.

1.) How long have you been knitting?

I taught myself in January 2007 I fell in love with it immediately.

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?

My first project was a washcloth. My second was sock, and my 3rd and fourth...

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?

Stick her in a corner and feed her raw onions.

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?

At this exact moment, I'm loving Araucania Ranco

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?

I'm mostly a toe-up kinda girl

6.) What's your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?

I'm actually open for just about anything, I'll try anything once... I've been thinking I really need a pair of orange socks... but unfortunately I have none..
and neither does my LYS.

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?

Yes, a big ol fat cat names Buster and a hermit crab

8.) Babies: Oven Roasted or Barbecued?

The only way is BBQ

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?

I do a lot of charity knitting on the side, mittens and hats for Mittens for Many (local) and blankets for project Linus.
But I think my favorite is the preemie hats that I make for the Children's Hospital In Milwaukee.

10.) What's your favorite scent?

Apples and cinnamon or citrus

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?

Honestly, with 3 boys ( 5, 6, and 8 ) home for the summer, I really just like quiet when I can get it :)

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?

I think 26, and I have 4 on the needles right now. Hmmm I didn't think it was that many...yikes!

13.) What's your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?

Oh both, sometimes even combined. I follow a fairly stick low carb diet, but every once in a while, a MCD craving kills me. French fries ( stolen from child's happy meal) dipped in their ice cream cone. YUM!

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.

Unfortunately, it was the garbage in the kitchen. Opened it to dump the coffee grounds, and WOOSH.... Banana stink! mixed with what ever else has been in there for 2 days... yuck

15.) Needles - DPN's: Wooden, metal or plastic?

Geez, don't use DPN's very much, but I have a ton of bamboo and a few metal. I like both I guess, depends on the project though.

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?

Honestly, it depends on what you like. I don't really like lace that much, but monkeys, peace socks, and spring forward are nice. I prefer textured, I like RPM, 9 to 5 ( the finished project only). I really like almost everything from Wendy's knits, Cat Bordhi, and Charlene Schurch.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?

Gee, I would have to take my husband, anyone else after a few days would kill me. I would have to take enough yarn to make a house cozy, hence a ton of yarn, I could never get bored then, only one skein would get pretty bad using it over and over again. I'd probably eventually like to leave, but I would love some quality alone time with my husband for some time, it doesn't happen much anymore around here.

Thai food

15.) Needles - DPN's: Wooden, metal or plastic?

Wood or metal - not plastic.

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?

Stockinette toe-up with a 3" rib cuff.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?
Monkey socks are fun, Buffalo girls were quick but I prefer my own generic fit my foot pattern.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave

DH (gotta have sex), a few of my knitting and artsy friends...a spinning wheel, lace and sock wt yarn and my needles and a lace pattern book, my art journal and the internet. If food would be no problem..I'd be set for life.

Thanks for letting me play.
Viki

Hi,

Holy crap friend... I don't even know where to start. I think my brain hurts. :-)

1.) How long have you been knitting?

Well my grandmother taught me 10 years ago, but I've really only been knitting consistently the last 4-5 years.

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?

I'm not sure of an exact date, but I believe it was 21/2 years ago, Caroline inspired me to knit my first socks out of lorna's laces on size 0 ... I still only have one sock from that project. :-) I thought I would give socks another try in a worsted weight yarn and things went much better. I am happy to say I have now completed Cookie A's Monkey Socks last summer! WOOHOO!!

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?

I'm not even sure where to start with this one ... I am not one to promote alcohol to solve problems, but I am sure one of your fabulous margaritas would help or how about a mojito for whatchamacallit?

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?

Wow I have so many I could list ... love Sundara, Socks that Rock and Scout's yarn ... geesh they all start with S ... does that mean something? hmmmm

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?

Well, I have only done cuff down, but my guess is I'll be a toe up convert at some point ... are all the cool kids doing it?

6.) What's your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?

Love Teal ... anything blue and green is for me. I love color in general. I am not really a neutral kind of person, but I love olives and browns too. Usually bright color wins.

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?

Yes, I have an ADHD puppy zoe ... super cute and the worlds softest, according to the vet she feels like a bunny, short hair cat named Bella. Love them ... I am particularly attached to the cat, maybe because I got her first.

8.) Babies: Oven Roasted or Barbecued?

This is so a Knitty Otter question. Would it be wrong to ask if you were also going to serve your world famous baby donuts? It might have an impact on my cooking choice. In general I am going to have to go with BBQ.

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?

I would have to say hats, scarves and headbands. I also love entralac. I am trying to branch out, but since I don't seem to have a whole lot of time to knit these days, the instant gratification of the hats help me not go insane from knitting on the same thing over and over and over. Yikes ... time to book a therapy session ... I need to find more knitting time and something else in my life has to go! :-)

10.) What's your favorite scent?

There is this candle right now that is Tuscan Blood Orange... love it!! I also love the Alora Ambiance Airfreshner Set in Isola and Due. I love the Body Shop's Satsuma Body Butter and Bath and Body Works Rice Flower Shea body lotion. I love lavender in general, but at night I also love the Kiss My Face Early to Bed Shower Gel... very relaxing. I am sure I could list a million other things, but I'll stop.

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?

Hmmm ... Amos Lee, Holly Brook, Juno Soundtrack, I love Bill Withers Ain't No Sunshine. Geesh I don't know I love music in general ... maybe a little obsessed. I don't even want to know how much time I would spend on itunes if I didn't have a job ... well maybe less than I do now. LOL

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?

ahh ... 5 pair ... I only count my Monkey Socks since the rest were worsted weight yarn.

13.) What's your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?

Depends on my mood but I guess I would say Salty over sweet. I love the Tuscan White Bean Hummus from Trader Joe's on yummy bread... I'm craving it like crazy since I can't eat it right now. I also enjoy dark Chocolate with Red Wine.

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.

The computer geek down the hall. I am not sure what stuck in my mind more the smell or how blue his eyes are ... I would have asked him what cologne he was wearing but I thought that might freak him out a little. Plus, I was trying not to stare too much at his eyes. Well actually, I was just hoping to control the ADD long enough to not blurt out something totally stupid. :-) I don't think that even really answered the question ... oh well. I guess you are used to me by now.

15.) Needles - DPN's: Wooden, metal or plastic?

I have yet to try the Bryspun needles, maybe that should be something I buy soon. I love the Knitpicks wood and metal needles.

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?

Well, if you read above than you know I haven't knit many yet, but I loved the monkey socks. I really like Cookie A's patterns and there is another sock I want to make called Drunken Bees.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?

Hmmm ... I'm not sure who I would bring. I might bring Gracie only because she wants to run far far away from Mommy dearest and well she's my cousin so family is good. Hmm... I suppose I could say some celebrity crush but considering I don't really know them it would be weird. How about some super cute foreign guy. I am sucker for accents. If it were an Island in the Maldives then I would never leave.

WOW ... did I get all of them? Well I am pretty sure you knew most of this stuff. I am hoping this doesn't end up used as blackmail in an attempt to raid my yarn stash.

Love ya and see you soon,
Monkey Socks

Mine are posting tomorrow morning (Thursday). Thanks for posting such a fun questionnaire.

Here's mine: http://purlingoaks.typepad.com/purling_oaks/2008/07/maria-who.html

Getting to Know you Contest Questionnaire:

1.) How long have you been knitting?

I learned to knit in 1982, but I didn't take it up seriously until 1993.

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?

Since Christmas 2000. My husband got me Cat Bordhi's sock book, several sets of needles, and some nice yarn.

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?

Run merrily over the hills with her, singing loudly. If we annoy everyone else enough, they'll all go away and it won't be a problem anymore.

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?

So far I have to go with the KnitPicks Gloss. It doesn't have all the fabulous colors, but boy does it have a lovely hand.

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?

I learned on cuff down and haven't tried toe up yet. It's on my list, as soon as I run into a sock pattern I can't resist that's toe up.

6.) What's your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?

Purples and blue-greens - but I'm game for almost anything.

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?

Yep. A big ol' basset hound that thinks he's a cat.

8.) Babies: Oven Roasted or Barbecued?

Oven roasted, of course. You wouldn't waste barbequing on already tender, fatty meat.

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?
Sweaters. I am all about knitting sweaters. Particularly lovely textured things with cables or lace.

10.) What's your favorite scent?

Rose or white ginger, if they're good. Both are remarkably hard to find in forms that don't smell fake or chemical. Citrusy stuff is good. Jasmine is good. Sandlewood is good. Anything with even a hint of musk is right out - mostly because my skin chemistry rapidly makes me smell like rotting garbage.

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?

Recently rediscovered my love of Billy Joel. "Downeaster Alexa" just makes me tear up every time.

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?

Umm - I'm supposed to have kept track? Really? Let's see - at least four pairs for children, four for myself, one for husband, one for Mom, two for friends - so at least 12, probably more.

13.) What's your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?

Sweet. No contest.

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.

Homemade Peach Cobbler

15.) Needles - DPN's: Wooden, metal or plastic?

Addi Turbos - in the extra long version for Magic Loop knitting.

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you've knit? What do you recommend?

A basic top-down k2p2 ribbed sock for kids. Expands enough to last them for a long time, even when they're growing like weeds.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?

My husband the engineer - we'd have a comfortable life in no time flat. I'd bring something from Alice Starmore, or something in a really complicated lace that would last me forever. And no, as long as I had a decent supply of books, I'd never want to leave. I'm a bit of a hermit by nature!
