Since I started playing with yarn back at the end of January or so I have been dreaming about the process. I started with Crochet so I dreamed about Crochet. I haven't given it up or anything, I've just set it aside to pursue knitting at the moment. I've found knitting to be far more exciting than crochet was and a lot easier to understand as well. I'm in love.
Now back to the dreams. So when I first started thinking about knitting seriously I started dreaming about knitting. Even though I had never picked up a pair of knitting needles and had never seen anyone knit in person I had vivid dreams with intricate detail. I woke up with a fleeting feeling that if I could recall what my dream self had done I could start knitting right away. It was like the answers were at the tip of my fingers just out of reach.
I even dreamed my cat could knit. o.0 Which is really cool to see in your dreams. I attributed that to the fact she sleeps on my head at night. Well on my pillow curled around my head but still.
After I started knitting I'd wake up in bed feeling like I just learned something and would actually look for my needles and yarn in the blankets. I'd be worried that I'd mess up what I had just created. *L*
Last night I dreamed I was knitting something with cables. I put three stitches on a needles in front and knit the next three, then I knit the three I had on the DPN. Then I knit and purl and then did it again. Over and over in my dreams I did this.
I woke up this morning feeling like I could make a cable and before that feeling left me I grabbed the nearest yarn and needles. For good measure I also grabbed my Teach Yourself VISUALLY Knitting book. ;)
Voilà!
Oh and I discovered I had a cable needle. It's a bit awkward. It's metal with a dip in it. I saw some online that are wooden. Just like really short DPN's. I think I'd like that style better.
Here's a full size image of what I did. I love the way the yarn got all stripey. :D
I found that if I walk away and don't mark which row I'm on I'll completely forget what I'm doing and mess it up. *L* I also experimented with some Yarn Overs closer to the top. I need to work on that. I'm not sure I did it properly. I have a cool pattern that calls for YO and SSK. I need to figure out how to do the SSK before I can do it though. ;)
Cables are REALLY fun to do. Now I need to find something I can use them on. :D
Your cable is beautiful!
(Come on, you can tell us now ... you have really been knitting for 60-odd years.)
My first attempt at cable-making didn't look nearly that even and nice. And I had huge holes between the cable and the rest of the knitting.
Need a pattern using cables? Try the Irish Hiking Scarf. Or cheat like I did - and make Irish Hiking Handwarmers. (The gratification was a lot more instantaneous.)
BTW, there's another type of cable needle - a third kind - I think. Or you could try cabling without a cable needle!
Happy knitting!

I see Janey already beat me to suggesting the IRISH HIKING SCARF. It is a fun and very gratifying first cable project (www.helloyarn.com)

Holy shit!
You are officially a better knitter than I am. The thought of cables freak me out.
You are doing so well, and I am so proud of you!

Hi, I found your blog through your comment at Stacey's blog (Sheep in the City). I was curious about the otter who was knitting. ;)
Your cables look great! I can't believe it is your first try.
